Saplings Plantation Drive
- Saplings Plantation Drive Organized at Shanmuganathan Engineering College by Thirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee.
- A grand tree plantation drive was jointly organized by the Thirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Shanmuganathan Engineering College, Arasampatti, here on Monday.
- The event commenced with a welcome address by the college NSS Programme Officer, Mr. Perumal. Honorable Mr. M. Dhayalan, Sub-Judge and Chairman of the Thirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee, presided over the function and initiated the drive.
- In his presidential address, Sub-Judge Dhayalan underscored the indispensable role of trees in sustaining human life. He stated that maintaining a clean environment is vital for the progress and well-being of human society. Highlighting the cultural roots of conservation, he noted that ancestors nurtured trees like their own children, which is why the Tamil tradition fondly refers to a coconut sapling as 'Thennam Pillai' (Coconut Child).
- Expressing concern over climate change, the Judge remarked that global warming has intensified to the extent that regular days now experience summer-like heat waves. He warned that the rising temperature of the Earth is severely impacting the ecological balance, forcing humanity to face various environmental hardships.
- To mitigate this crisis, he urged everyone to actively plant and maintain trees to restore the Earth's green cover, calling it a duty and a token of gratitude to the planet that sustains life. He concluded by calling upon the gathering to take a pledge to protect the environment and all living beings.
- Following his speech, the Sub-Judge planted saplings on the college campus. Dr. KL. Muthuramu, Principal of the college, delivered the vote of thanks.
- The event was attended by Honorable S. Kavitha, District Munsif of Thirumayam; Mr. Rajasekar, Senior Administrative Assistant of the Thirumayam Taluk Legal Services Committee; and Mr. Jothiraman, Para-Legal Volunteer. Dr. N. Vennila, First-Year Coordinator, along with various department heads and a large number of NSS student volunteers, also participated in the initiative.
